Symposia
At the Discovery through GCxGC
Separations symposium, a variety of speakers will speak about two-dimensional
GC as the next step in complex sample analysis. Scheduled for Thrusday,
March 16, the discussion will also examine how two-dimensional GC
may provide the platform for discoveries that have been hidden from
analysts because of incomplete separations on conventional single
column formats.
Monday, March 13, Electron-Based Methods for Tandem Mass Spectrometry
will provide attendees with a brief history of MS/MS methods, in
addition to the instrumentation, theoretical understanding of ECD
and ETD, and applications involving increasingly streamlined detection
of post-translational modifications.

Special
Session: Gemstone Analysis
Gemstone/Mineral Analysis: Developing
Non -Destructive Analytical Methods and Assessment Standards for
Identification and Classification is a comprehensive program addressing
emerging technologies for gemstone analysis. Sunday, March 12, researchers
will talk about the technological challenges facing the diamond
and colored-stone world in the next decade.
Dr. Russell Hemley will conduct the opening segment, which will
cover developments in chemical vapor deposition diamonds that can
potentially break the 100 carat, mega, gem quality diamond mark
at growth rates of 1 mm/hr. Seven other researchers will present
their individual research activity ranging from beryllium/ light
element detection and quantification to current Raman applications
for advanced diamond examination.

Short
Courses
Scientists, engineers and technical
managers currently using (or intending to use) two-dimensional X-ray
diffraction for materials characterization should stop by Tuesday,
March 14 and listen to Bob He present Applications of Two-Dimensional
X -Ray Diffraction. This course covers the basic concept and recent
progress in two- dimensional X-ray diffraction theory and technologies,
and compares conventional diffractometers with the two-dimensional
diffractometers in terms of geometry, components and application
advantages.
Sunday, March 12, Clara Carver will introduce infrared spectroscopy
and describe major chemical structures of polymers as used for identification
and characterization. The course, FT-IR Characterization of Polymers,
includes needed theory for obtaining and interpreting spectra of
unknown polymers, copolymers and polymer blends. The value of subtraction
techniques and scale expansion will be demonstrated by spectra of
complex systems.

Static and Dynamic Headspace Autosampler
EST Analytical (Booth 3745) will showcase
the Markelov HS 9000 static and dynamic
headspace autosampler, which features a
dual needle design and horizontal rotary
mixing. Sensitivity can be increased up to
100X because the dual needle continually
sweeps the headspace for concentration on
the optional adsorbent trap or at the
analytical column.
