Rice Scientists Make First Nanoscale pH Meter
Using unique nanoparticles that convert laser light into useful information, Rice University scientists have created the world's first nano-sized pH meter. The discovery, which appears online this week in the jour nal Nano Letters, present s biologists with the first potential means of measuring accurate pH changes over a wide pH range in real-time inside living tissue and cells.
"Almost every biologist I speak with comes up with one or two things they'd like to measure with this," said lead researcher Naomi Halas, the Stanley C. Moore Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, professor of chemistry and director of Rice's Laboratory for Nanophotonics (LANP). more>>>

New Process Makes Diesel Fuel, Industrial Chemicals from Simple Sugars
James Dumesic, a University of Wisconsin-Madison chemical and biological engineering professor, reports on a better way to make a chemical intermediate called HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural) from fructose: fruit sugar. HMF can be converted into plastics, diesel-fuel additive, or even diesel fuel itself, but is seldom used because it is costly to make.
The new process goes beyond making fuel from plants to make industrial chemicals from plants. "Trying to understand how to use catalytic processes to make chemicals and fuel from biomass is a growing area," says Dumesic, who directed the HMF research. "Instead of using the ancient solar energy locked up in fossil fuels, we are trying to take advantage of the carbon dioxide and modern solar energy that crop plants pick up." more>>>

Chemists Make Superstar Reaction More Accessible
If a chemical reaction can enjoy superstar status, then the process known as metathesis just might qualify.
The reaction, involving a swap of atom groups that has been compared to changing partners in a square dance, made news when three scientists shared the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for figuring out how the reaction works and how to make it more efficient and simpler to use. Their work with metathesis in olefins—compounds that contain double bonds between carbon atoms—paved the way for developing new molecules that can be used in pharmaceuticals, advanced plastics and other applications. more>>>

Liquid Alloy Shows Solid-like Crystal Structure at Surface
A substance used in nanotechnology contains unusual structures at its surface, a team of researchers led by Oleg Shpyrko, Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory have learned.
The substance in question is a gold-silicon eutectic alloy, 82 percent gold and 18 percent silicon. The term eutectic means that the combination melts at a temperature lower than that of the melting temperature of either of its components. For most eutectic alloys, the difference between the melting point of the alloy and those of its pure components is about 100 degrees Centigrade; the gold-silicon eutectic alloy melts about 1,000 °C lower than either of its components, at 360 °C (680 °F). more>>>

Strategic Lab Management Conference – Coming in October
Lab managers need to understand a vast array of quality systems requirements—systems that require intricate documentation and workflow management. Health, safety and environmental regulations are changing rapidly, and lack of knowledge about these changes is no excuse. Attracting and retaining quality staff is a major challenge. And within the next several years, the majority of lab managers will be involved in a major expansion, retrofit, renovation or replacement of their facility.
Reed Science Group’s Strategic Lab Management Conference will show you how to manage quality issues, comply with a changing regulatory environment, transfer technology to market, reduce capital and supply costs and evaluate state-of-the-art laboratory information management systems. more>>>
