Counterfeit Contents: Analytical Techniques Developed to Quantify Composition of Fake Anti-Malarials
Georgia Tech Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Facundo Fernandez began studying counterfeit anti-malarials two years ago using conventional analytical chemistry techniques based on liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. But these methods required more than two hours to analyze just one sample. So he and his graduate students developed new, high-throughput ionization techniques that now allow them to complete the same analytical analyses in just five seconds per sample. more>>>

Desalination Roadmap Seeks Technological Solutions to Increase Nation’s Water Supply
After one last meeting in San Antonio in April, Sandia National Laboratories researchers Pat Brady and Tom Hinkebein are putting the final touches on the updated Desalination and Water Purification Roadmap — “Roadmap 2” — that should result in more fresh water in parts of the world where potable water is scarce.
The roadmap will recommend specific areas of potential water desalination research and development that may lead to technological solutions to water shortage problems. more>>>

Scientists Tackle Long-Standing Questions about Plutonium
Scientists have gone a long way to solving a question about the nature of plutonium that has remained a mystery since the Manhattan Project. First batches of the metal were too brittle to machine due to the mineral-like structure of the crystal. In order to make the metal machinable, the high-temperature, high-symmetry cubic structure of plutonium needed to be retained to room temperature.
Scientists during the Manhattan Project achieved this by adding a small amount of gallium.
There was never a clear explanation as to why gallium stabilized the ductile cubic structure over the low-symmetry mineral-like structure; they just did it and it worked, said Kevin Moore, a staff scientist in the Materials Science and Technology Division at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. more>>>

High-Performance Computing Aids Calculations of Combustion Kinetics
Even though combustion provides 85 percent of the energy humans use, little is known about many of its most basic chemical reactions. Researchers in Argonne's Chemistry Division have brought together advances in theoretical chemical kinetics and high-performance computing to speed research in the chemistry of fuel combustion.
The chemists developed a new approach to predict the rates of chemical reactions that greatly increases efficiency while maintaining accuracy, cutting costs and allowing research to expand to larger molecules. more>>>
Strategic Lab Management Conference – Coming in October
Lab managers need to understand a vast array of quality systems requirements—systems that require intricate documentation and workflow management. Health, safety and environmental regulations are changing rapidly, and lack of knowledge about these changes is no excuse. Attracting and retaining quality staff is a major challenge. And within the next several years, the majority of lab managers will be involved in a major expansion, retrofit, renovation or replacement of their facility.
Reed Science Group’s Strategic Lab Management Conference will show you how to manage quality issues, comply with a changing regulatory environment, transfer technology to market, reduce capital and supply costs and evaluate state-of-the-art laboratory information management systems. more>>>
