Researchers Find Metal Gets Stronger With Three or More Line Dislocations
Since the Iron Age, metallurgists have known that metals such as steel become stronger and harder the more you hit (or beat) on them. But it wasn't always clear why this happened. Vasily Bulatov and colleagues at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory discovered that the common explanation for this hardening process ignored a key component. Through a series of computer simulations and experiments using the metal molybdenum, the team determined that three line defects (also known as dislocations) in the crystal structure of metals create a stronger bond than when only two dislocations intersect. more>>>

Chornobyl — 20 Years after the Fact
April 26, 2006 marked the 20th anniversary of the worst accident in the history of civil nuclear energy. Thought to be caused by a combination of design, technical and operator errors, the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster left a ruined reactor rapidly spreading radioactive contamination across the former Soviet Union.

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been in the Ukraine over the last two decades, assisting the plant in several different areas, including shelter design, environmental sampling, dosimetery work, construction safety, safety maintenance technologies, radiation exposure safety training, control room training, technical strategies for deactivating the plant and the construction of a heat plant. more>>>

Neutron Source for Materials Research to Open at ORNL
When the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory began operations in 1981, few could envision that it would lead to the $1.4 billion Spallation Neutron Source, beginning operations this spring on the grounds of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

The Spallation Neutron Source, or SNS, is a unique collaboration of six Department of Energy laboratories, each bringing particular expertise to the design, construction and operation of the facility, which will provide the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development. The SNS is about 10 times more powerful than existing neutron sources. more>>>

National Science Board Announces 2006 Public Service Awards
He gave us decades of laughs as the mischievous Hawkeye Pierce on M.A.S.H., introduced political tension as the brusque, altruistic, conservative senator Arnold Vinick on The West Wing, and enraptured us with inspiring performances on stage.

But Alan Alda is more. An actor, writer, producer, director and immensely versatile communicator, he researches his subjects thoroughly and remains true to them. Alda is a natural for science, some might say.

Away from the cameras and in a corporate board room, Craig R. Barrett, chairman of computer giant Intel Corporation was bringing his own passion for education and science into his leadership style. In his very first act as the company's chief executive nearly a decade ago, Barrett announced that Intel would become "title" sponsor of the prestigious Science Talent Search.

Today, the National Science Board (NSB) honored Alda and Barrett with 2006 Public Service Awards for their extraordinary individual contributions to communicating science to the public and for increasing science literacy across broad audiences. more>>>
