Symposia
At the symposium, “A New Generation
of Microplasmas”, on Monday, March 13, speakers will review some
of the most recent work in the microplasma field. The event will
focus on novel plasma sources that can operate at very low power
levels, can be fabricated on a small chip, are battery-powered and
therefore portable, and can alternatively analyze samples directly
in the gaseous, liquid or solid phase.
The symposium, “Smaller, Cheaper, Faster and Smarter Analytical
Instrumentation”, will provide attendees with an overview of high-tech
successes and efforts made in labs around the world toward the development
of micro-analytical instruments. The speakers will highlight remaining
barriers and offer suggestions on how to overcome them. This symposium
is also planned for Monday.

Session Topics
“Strategies for the Automated Identification
of Compounds from LC/MS/MS Data” will be held on Thursday, March
16. The session will cover the current state of the art in rapid
and routine compound identification based on LC/MS/MS. Topics to
be discussed include generating reproducible CID spectra for library
searching in LC/MS and LC/MS/MS on a variety of instrument platforms.
A new fluorometric method for monitoring trace silica in highly
purified water will be introduced Sunday, March 12, at “Advances
in Impurity Analyses for Water and Aqueous Solutions”. The session
will also present details of the fluorometric detection-HPLC, in
which concentrations as low as 1 ppb of aluminum in solutions can
be determined simply and rapidly.

Short
Courses
Scientists, chemists, technicians,
laboratory managers and others seeking background information and
knowledge about contemporary analytical organic mass spectrometry
should listen to William L. Budde present his course, “ Analytical
Organic Mass Spectrometry”. Scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, the
course focuses on practical strategies and techniques applicable
to organic chemical analyses with GC/MS and LC/MS.
Wednesday, March 15, Gary Glish will teach the fundamental theory
and practical operation of quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometers.
The course, “ Quadrupole Ion Traps: Theory and Practice”, is suited
for scientists using or considering using this instrument. A brief
overview of the interpretation of peptide MS/MS data from an ion
trap will also be included.
