Event Information
General Information
American Vacuum Society (AVS) 53rd International Symposium and Exhibition
Date: Sunday, November 12 through Friday, November 17, 2006
Location: Moscone West Convention Center, San Francisco, California

The technical program will address a range of topics focusing on physical and chemical phenomenon occurring at the interfacial regions of complex systems. Areas to be covered include traditional fields such as vacuum technology or surface characterization and emerging topics like nanotechnology or biological interfaces. Topical conferences and plenary sessions will delve into subjects such as energy science and technology, nucleic acids at surfaces, ultra-bright light sources, nano-scale manufacturing, and biomaterials interfaces.

Exhibition hours:
Tuesday, November 14 – 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday, November 15 – 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Thursday, November 16 – 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. continue

Short Courses
Varying from one to two days, the short courses begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. with a 1-hour lunch break. Course levels range from introductory to advanced. Some will provide specific training for technicians, scientists and engineers who intend to use the technology every day while other courses are geared toward providing overviews for supervisors, managers and novices in these fields. continue

Public Lecture
Author of the book “End of Oil,” Paul Roberts will present the AVS Public Lecture Sunday evening, November 12. Open to the local community, this lecture will discuss how America’s energy policy, industrial strategy and political culture remain committed to hydrocarbons--despite recent support for “renewables” and a rise in energy rhetoric. continue

Product Introductions
Compact and Modular Digital Gauges
Kurt J. Lesker (Booth 1229) will showcase TRUE Digital gauges, offering a compact and modular alternative to error-prone analog pressure measurement. Data can be read directly into a PLC or PC with no required signal conversions. continue

Nanoindenter Module for Atomic Force Microscope
Asylum Research (Booth 1324) will feature the NanoIndenter module, which is suited for the proprietary MFP-3D AFM system, that the bridges the gap between conventional nanoindenters and AFMs. Tip displacement and force are measured with the AFM’s optical detector and NPS manopositioning sensors. continue

Vacuum Traps Incorporate Filters that Absorb Mercury Vapors
MV Products (Booth 1333) will present their Posi-Trap vacuum traps constructed from stainless steel. They feature Redisorb filters with a treated, activated carbon media that absorbs mercury vapors. Providing a positive seal that prevents blow-by, the traps can be used at the pump inlet to protect the vacuum pump. continue
