Award-Winning Grids and Collimators Produce Better X-Ray and Nuclear Images
A grid as little as three millimeters tall could save lives by helping X-rays and radiotracers provide clearer diagnostic images of the human body.

These X-ray anti-scatter grids and nuclear collimators were developed by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory and Creatv MicroTech, Inc. and identified as one of the top scientific and technological innovations in the world introduced as a product during 2005.

“The two areas where it's important for medical imaging are mammography and gamma ray imaging,” developer Derrick Mancini of Argonne's Center for Nanoscale Materials said. “Both of them are critically important for early detection of cancer and other diseases. The impact, therefore, is saving lives.” continue

Researchers Link Ice-Age Climate-Change Records to Ocean Salinity
Sudden decreases in temperature over Greenland and tropical rainfall patterns during the last Ice Age have been linked for the first time to rapid changes in the salinity of the north Atlantic Ocean, according to research published Oct. 5, 2006, in the journal Nature. The results provide further evidence that ocean circulation and chemistry respond to changes in climate.

Using chemical traces in fossil shells of microscopic planktonic life forms, called formanifera, in deep-sea sediment cores, scientists reconstructed a 45,000- to 60,000-year-old record of ocean temperature and salinity. They compared their results to the record of abrupt climate change recorded in ice cores from Greenland. They found the Atlantic got saltier during cold periods, and fresher during warm intervals. continue

A Pixel’s Worth 1,000 Words
For all their ease and convenience, few things are more wasteful and inefficient than digital cameras. They’re loaded with pricey microprocessors that chew through batteries at a breakneck pace, crunching millions of numbers per second in order to throw out up to 99 percent of the information flowing through the lens.

Using some new mathematics and a silicon chip covered with hundreds of thousands of mirrors the size of a single bacterium, engineers at Rice University have come up with a more efficient design. Unlike a one-megapixel camera that captures one million points of light for every frame, Rice’s camera creates an image by capturing just one point of light, or pixel, several thousand times in rapid succession. continue

Research to Illuminate Inner Workings of 'Protein Nanomachines'
Development of new instrumentation and methods for studying the molecular mechanisms of enzymes are the goals of a three-year, $1.5 million contract awarded to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory by the Department of Energy's energy biosciences program. continue

Strategic Lab Management Conference – Coming This Month
Lab managers need to understand a vast array of quality systems requirements—systems that require intricate documentation and workflow management. Health, safety and environmental regulations are changing rapidly, and lack of knowledge about these changes is no excuse. Attracting and retaining quality staff is a major challenge. And within the next several years, the majority of lab managers will be involved in a major expansion, retrofit, renovation or replacement of their facility.

Reed Science Group’s Strategic Lab Management Conference will show you how to manage quality issues, comply with a changing regulatory environment, transfer technology to market, reduce capital and supply costs and evaluate state-of-the-art laboratory information management systems. continue
