Jefferson Lab Innovation Saves $1,000/Day in Cooling Costs
A new process invented by Jefferson Lab engineers has revolutionized the way helium cryogenic plants work, saving electricity costs at several scientific research facilities. The cycle requires very few or no new components and nearly doubles the lifetime of refrigeration equipment, while improving system reliability, availability, stability and efficiency. Although the benefits of the process are fully realized for new plants, portions of the new process have already been demonstrated on existing systems with significant results. more>>>

Battelle Dedicates New Facility for Research into Energetic Materials and High Speed Events
Battelle officially dedicated a new facility today at its High Energy Research Laboratory Area that will give it expanded capabilities to conduct research into materials such as armor. The laboratory also conducts extensive research into energetic materials such as explosives and propellants and into high-speed events requiring exceptionally fast data capture equipment. The 12,500 square-foot facility was constructed over the last eight months. Together with other building and infrastructure improvements the total cost is about $2.5 million.
The new building will give researchers improved meeting and research space, instrumentation labs, and storage facilities and staging areas for setting up experiments before moving them into one of the several test chambers at the facility. Other improvements include an updated fiber optic backbone, storage and changing areas for safety equipment and upgraded chemical lab and storage facilities. more>>>
Small Building, Big Goals for Sciboone Construction
Fermilab's newest experiment, SciBar Booster Neutrino Experiment, broke ground Wednesday morning, September 20, beginning construction on what will become one of Fermilab's smallest buildings. The structure's basement will house the project's three-part detector, including the SciBar detector from Japan, to measure neutrino cross sections using the Booster neutrino beam.
SciBar will sit in the beam's direct path, 100 meters from the MiniBooNE target hall. Here it will be near enough to measure neutrinos before they oscillate, and distant enough to avoid other particles. more>>>
