Feed Additives Help Agriculture and the Environment
Talk about killing two birds with one stone. Researchers with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have designed feed supplements for poultry and other farm animals that not only boost nutrition, but also reduce the amount of potentially harmful phosphorus escaping into the environment.

ARS researchers Ed Mullaney and Jaffor Ullah have designed hard-working phytase enzymes that help chickens and swine digest more of the phosphorus found in their plant-based diets. While phosphorus is a necessary mineral that helps make up the DNA in all animals, excess phosphorus loads—in the form of manure—can contribute to pollution. more>>>

Molecular Detection Makes Identification of Foodborne Pathogens Faster, Easier and More Reliable
A University of Guelph food science professor says modern molecular detection methods are making the identification of foodborne pathogens faster, easier and more reliable.

Currently, to identify organisms such as salmonella, e. coli and campylobacter, scientists use culture based methods where they grow the organism on media that supports a specific pathogen to determine whether or not it is present. more>>>

Self-Cooling Soda Bottles?
Every day, the sun bathes the planet in energy--free of charge--yet few systems can take advantage of that source for both heating and cooling. Now, researchers are making progress on a thin-film technology that adheres both solar cells and heat pumps onto surfaces, ultimately turning walls, windows, and maybe even soda bottles into climate control systems.

For 4 years, the researchers have been working on their prototype Active Building Envelope (ABE) system. Comprised of solar panels, solid-state, thermoelectric heat pumps and a storage device to provide energy on rainy days (literally), the ABE system accomplishes the jobs of both cooling and heating, yet operates silently with no moving parts. more>>>

New X-Ray Microscope for Science and Industry
Until recently, X-ray technology was unable to achieve high-resolution imaging results at the microscopic level, particularly on objects with very weak X-ray absorption characteristics.

However, using powerful X-ray microscopes and experimenting with a variety of X-ray phase-contrast imaging techniques, scientists have been able to use the penetrating power of X-rays to directly image the internal microstructures of even opaque and multi-layer objects. It is now possible to use X-rays to see inside objects such as micro-electronic components, structural materials used in aerospace, ceramics, metal foams and even minerals. more>>>
