Project Achieves Milestone
in Analyzing Pollutants
A scientific research consortium
led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of
California, San Diego, has reached an important milestone in the
tracking of pollutants responsible for dimming Earth’s atmosphere.
Scripps Oceanography scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan reported
that instrument-bearing autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (AUAVs)
completed 18 successful data-gathering missions in pollution-filled
skies over the Maldives, an island chain nation south of India.
During the Maldives AUAV Campaign (MAC), groupings of three aircraft
flew in synchronous vertical formation, which allowed onboard instruments
to observe conditions below, inside and above clouds simultaneously.
Researchers hope the data produced during the flights will reveal
in unprecedented detail how pollution particles contribute to the
formation of clouds and the resulting dimming from the polluted
clouds....more>>>

USDA Announces Method for Enforcing
the Horse Protection Act
The USDA's Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service (APHIS) announced on Friday (April 14) the use
of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to enforce the Horse
Protection Act (HPA). The method will detect horses that have been
subjected to soring.
Since 2004, APHIS' animal care program has held public meetings
and informed horse industry organizations regarding the implementation
of GC/MS technologies. USDA officials say this tool will aid APHIS'
efforts to detect the practice of soring, a cruel and inhumane practice
used to accentuate a horse's gait. Soring may be accomplished by
irritating or blistering a horse's forelegs through the injection
or application of chemicals, mechanical devices, cuts, lacerations
or burns....more>>>

Chemist Discovers Secret behind
Nature's Medicines
MIT scientists have just learned
another lesson from nature. After years of wondering how organisms
managed to create self-medications, such as anti-fungal agents,
chemists have discovered the simple secret.
Scientists already knew that a particular enzyme was able to coax
a reaction out of stubborn chemical concoctions to generate a large
family of medically valuable compounds called halogenated natural
products. The question was, how do they do it? Thanks to MIT chemistry
Associate Professor Catherine L. Drennan's recent crystallography
sleuthing, the secret to the enzyme's enviable prowess has come
to light and it appears almost anti-climactic. It's simply a matter
of the size of one of its parts. ...more>>>

Streamlined
LC/MS Peak Identification Technology
An improvement to Advanced Chemistry Development’s MS Manager
software allows users to automatically find and label LC/MS
peaks with a specified mass, and identify and label peaks with
a user-specified difference from a reference mass value. Called
ACD/Ion Presence, this flexible feature helps target the peaks
of a parent drug and search for expected metabolite transformations.
