Purdue Creates Simpler Alternative for Chemical-Analysis Method
Purdue University researchers have developed a relatively simple alternative to sophisticated techniques now used to ionize
materials, a critical step needed for chemical analyses involving instruments called mass spectrometers.

| U. Michigan-led Team Gets Grant to Develop Materials To Bend Lightwaves Backwards
A University of Michigan research team will receive a combined total of $5 million over the next five years to support an
interdisciplinary research project on negative refraction—or bending lightwaves downward.
The group of physicists, electrical engineers, materials scientists, chemists and biologists from five universities will
explore methods to produce new synthetic materials that can refract, or bend, light waves “backwards.” more>>>

In research that could help control contamination from the radioactive element uranium, scientists have discovered that some
bacteria found in the soil and subsurface can release phosphate that converts uranium contamination into an insoluble and
immobile form.
Based on laboratory studies, Georgia Institute of Technology researchers report promising results using bacterial species
from three genera isolated from subsurface soils collected at a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Field Research Center site in
Oak Ridge, Tenn.
