A Breath Test for Lung Cancer?
A new study by a research group at the Cleveland Clinic has led to a novel way of diagnosing lung cancers. The idea for the system is similar to that of a breath-a-lyzer. Patients are asked to breathe over a colorimetric sensor array. The array comprises a disposable membrane that has been spotted with 36 different chemicals that change color when they are exposed to certain volatile chemicals. The spots are laid out as a 6X6 matrix on a coin sized membrane over which a pump slowly passes a patient's breath over a period of 12 minutes. Cancer cells have altered metabolism which causes them to emit a different profile of volatile chemicals and this difference is what is detected by the array.
One other reliable way of detecting lung cancers at early stages is by analyzing the VOC signature of a patient's breath using GC-MS (Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectroscopy). continue

UpFront Continues Path toward Construction of World's Largest Industrial Chromatography Installation
UpFront Chromatography A/S, developer of customized industrial protein chromatography processes, has announced a collaboration with Solanic for the installation of a Rhobust industrial production plant for the extraction of high-quality functional proteins from the side-stream of potato starch production. Solanic is a business unit of the world's largest producer of potato starch and starch derivatives, AVEBE. The installation can process over 100,000 liters of raw material each day and is part of a larger project ultimately planned to extract even more than 10,000 tons per year of high value functional proteins for use in food and healthcare. The project will be the world's biggest industrial protein chromatography installation by far. continue

Waters and Hitachi High Technologies Collaborate on the Development of Chromatography Interface Software for Empower 2 in North America
Waters Corporation and Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation have announced their intent to develop a software interface for Hitachi’s Liquid Chromatograph Instruments 'LaChrom Elite' Control for Waters® Chromatographic Data Station Software Empower 2.
It is anticipated that HHT will develop and sell an interface for the Waters Empower® 2 chromatography data software in combination with its own line of liquid chromatography (LC) systems in the North America market.continue
