Hybrid Structures Combine Strengths of Carbon Nanotubes and Nanowires
A team of researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has created hybrid structures that combine the best properties of carbon nanotubes and metal nanowires. The new structures, which are described in a recent issue of Applied Physics Letters, could help overcome some of the key hurdles to using carbon nanotubes in computer chips, displays, sensors, and many other electronic devices.
The impressive conductivity of carbon nanotubes makes them promising materials for a wide variety of electronic applications, but techniques to attach individual nanotubes to metal contacts have proven challenging. The new approach allows the precise attachment of carbon nanotubes to individual metal pins, offering a practical solution to the problem of using carbon nanotubes as interconnects and devices in computer chips.continue

Novel Computed Imaging Technique Uses Blurry Images to Enhance View
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a novel computational image-forming technique for optical microscopy that can produce crisp, three-dimensional images from blurry, out-of-focus data.
Called Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Microscopy, ISAM can do for optical microscopy what magnetic resonance imaging did for nuclear magnetic resonance, and what computed tomography did for X-ray imaging, the scientists say.continue

Researchers have long used x-rays as a tool for studying environmental contaminants. Now, thanks to a new U.S. DOE BER-funded microprobe at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory’s beamline 2-3, unlocking the secrets of how these contaminants behave on a molecular level is getting both easier and more accurate. Unlike other x-ray techniques that look only at overall compositions of a sample, the new microprobe allows a sample to be moved around, creating detailed picture of where certain compounds lie. continue
